TPD | Victim Advocacy

TPD Victim Advocates

The TPD Victim Advocate Unit supports individuals impacted by crime or crisis by providing immediate and ongoing assistance. Advocates offer on-scene crisis response, safety planning, help with protective orders, and referrals to essential services like counseling and safe shelter. We work closely with law enforcement and community partners to reduce trauma, protect victims’ rights, and guide survivors through the justice process.

The unit is staffed with four advocates who provide 24-hour assistance. Services provided by the unit include:

  • 24/7 Crisis Response On-scene support during or after a crime or traumatic event
  • Emotional Support-Trauma informed care to help survivors stabilize and heal
  • Safety Planning Assistance developing personalized plans to increase safety
  • Injunctions for Protection Help filing for restraining/protective orders
  • Court Accompaniment Support throughout court hearings or legal processes
  • Victims’ Rights Education Information on rights under Florida law
  • Referrals to Community Resources Shelter, counseling, legal aid and more
  • Help with Victim Compensation Guidance on applying for financial assistance
  • Training and Outreach Presentations for law enforcement, community partners, and the public on victim rights, available services, and trauma-informed response. Presentations can be tailored to meet specific group needs

All services provided by the Victim Advocate Unit are free. We assist individuals of all ages and backgrounds who have experienced or witnessed a crime or traumatic event. You do not need to file a police report to speak with an advocate.

Our advocates are here to help you navigate crisis and recovery-every step of the way. If you would like to speak to an advocate, please call our line at 850-891-4237 or contact the main office at 850-891-4200. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. Walk-ins are welcome, and referrals from law enforcement or community partners are encouraged.

As a victim of crime in Florida, you have important rights under state law, including Florida Statute 960. These rights are designed to ensure you are treated with fairness, dignity, and respect throughout the justice process.

Your rights include:

  • The right to be informed, present, and heard in court proceedings
  • The right to protection from harassment or intimidation
  • The right to be notified of important case updates and hearings
  • The right to request restitution from the offender
  • The right to apply for victim compensation
  • The right to privacy and the confidentiality of certain information

Our advocates help you understand and exercise these rights. We can:

  • Explain the court process and what to expect
  • Attend hearings with you
  • Help you apply for compensation
  • Ensure your voice is heard when decisions are made

For more information about your Victim Rights, please download our Victim Right's Pamphlet, (en español). Learn more at Florida Statute Chapter 960.
